Happy Birthday
September 10th – November 6th, 2021
Preview: Friday 10th September, 6-8pm*
Artist talk: Thursday 4th November, 7-8.30pm
Happy Birthday is a solo exhibition of new and re-visited work by artist, designer, cartoonist and publisher, Leomi Sadler.
After a decade of publishing and self-publishing comic books, Sadler has become somewhat of a cult figure of the alternative comic scene, leading to this years much anticipated release of Tummy Bugs (Breakdown Press), an anthology offering a historical, thematic and material perspective over comic based work produced over recent years.
Alongside printed matter, Leomi’s drawing style both extends to and derives from her various sculptural forms and reliefs. Executed in materials as wide ranging as fabric, clay, resin and found objects, these utilise the application of loose, fuzzy and globby materials, often directed and assembled through re-forming past drawings & sculptures, layering materials and reappropriating found images and objects.
With her brother Stef Sadler and a core group of collaborators including GHXYK2, Kitty Clark and Uncle Jon Chandler, Leomi runs the revered “anti-ambitious entity” Famicon Express. An imprint that publishes their own material alongside a wider group of collaborators and affiliates.
Leomi also runs Tydrax 618, a production platform that produces hand made and printed garments that have also extended to items including hair extensions and staging live-events and performance, and also co-edits the Mould-Map series of magazines with Hugh Frost (Landfill Editions). Leomi has also designed garments for and with fashion houses and labels including Givenchy, Gasius, Brain Dead, Heresy and most recently Perks and Mini.
*Let it be known "This is how I decorate a cake!".
To extend the exhibition opening celebrations we ran a cake decorating competition. Everyone who came to the opening was invited to bring a cake they had decorated themselves. Judged by Leomi herself, the best decorated cake won a special prize and all entrants received a special thank you gift.
